Despite the varying amounts of coursework involved in the different GCSE/IGCSE subjects and specifications/syllabuses, it is still written examinations which effectively determine the final results. In turn, these usually govern the options open to students at 16+, whether they choose to continue their studies or explore other avenues. Good grades are important not only as a preparation for corresponding AS, IB or pre-U courses; in the future they come to represent the only concrete evidence of a candidates across-the-board performance which Universities will undoubtedly scrutinise when considering UCAS applications or equivalents. Particularly for entrance to the most competitive disciplines like Medicine and also popular courses at the long-established Universities, where serious candidates will possess top grades in the relevant GCSEs or IGCSEs, it may well be apparently-unrelated subjects that ultimately prove discriminating. |
