Typically IGCSE specifications/syllabuses require rather less Coursework than their GCSE counterparts. Written examinations therefore effectively determine the outcome. In turn, these usually govern the options open to students at 16+, whether they choose to continue their studies or otherwise. Good grades are important not only as a preparation for corresponding AS, IB or pre-U courses; in the future they come to represent the only concrete evidence of a candidates across-the-board performance which Universities will undoubtedly scrutinise when considering UCAS applications or equivalents. Particularly for entrance to the most competitive disciplines like Medicine and establishments such as Oxbridge, where serious candidates possess top grades in the relevant IGCSEs or GCSEs, it may well be apparently-unrelated subjects that ultimately prove discriminating. |
