This course has been developed by a former fire officer to enable staff to have the knowledge and practical experience to undertake the fire warden role. It includes a practical element using portable fire fighting equipment to tackle real controlled fires.
This course has been designed to develop the delegate's competence in the role of fire warden and in the use of portable fire fighting equipment.
The course will cover: Fire awareness; The evolution of Fire Safety Legislation; Fire extinguishers and classes of fire; Non emergency duties of fire wardens; Hazard spotting in the workplace; Maintenance, checking and testing requirements; Fire evacuation strategies; Staff fire training duties and requirements; Effective fire drills and the management of drills; Emergency procedures in workplaces; The speed of fire and smoke spread; Building sweeping systems (physical checks); Fire procedures for disabled persons; Fire emergency plans.
The course is divided into a theory and practical element. The practical element will allow delegates to have hands on experience of using different types of equipment on real fires in a controlled situation (delegates tackling the fire will be instructed 1:1 whilst the gas-fueled fire simulators are controlled by our fire technician).

Delegate competence will have increased through greater understanding of the fire warden's role, how fires start and spread, when it is safe to tackle a fire with a portable extinguisher, and the classes of fire different extinguishers are suitable for. They will have gained practical experience of handling extinguishers.
Delegates will be assessed during the practical element of the course and will complete a short multiple choice paper. Successful delegates will be provided with a competence certificate.
This course is suitable for staff who are or will be undertaking the fire warden role within their establishment.
